The Grave Diggers
Extremely excited and eager, waiting outside the IDS
Mini Theater because the student’s under Sir Amado will make a stage act on the
distillation of the famous Edilberto K. Teimpo’s The Grave Diggers.
As an English major I was really excited to watch the
play because I know in the right time we will be in their foot acting on a spot
light. The setting was really scary and as if it was for real. And I expected
that it will as magnificent as the Twelfth Night because Professor Jean
Graciella E. Peñiola was taking its part as the director. I guess the play was all about the grave
diggers were getting used of their jobs. They get the jewelries and anything
from the grave for their living. They have this ritual for praying on the dead
body for them to rest in peace in spite of what they did. Nicolas was forcing
Augustine to join to their business but Augustine is a very honest man and he
refuses them. He said he was just practical in this complicated world.
At first the play was kind of boring. I could not
understand what was the actors was saying specially Nicolas. When he speaks, he
eats the words and I couldn’t internalize what he was saying. Some of the
actors were laughing even there is nothing to laugh. But it was saved by
Augustine which portrays the role of a pure and honest grave digger. With his
emotions, he captures the attention of the audience. And he was successful
because we were onto it. The story was really good; we could learn something
from it. But as what I have said some actors are not portraying their roles,
making a little distortion of the play. But in general, the story of the play was
good; the setting was nice, the main actor Augustine played well in his role.
So, a job well done for you guys!
There were also nuisance ghosts :D
